What is coaching?
Coaching is a process that can help anyone realise their dreams. If there is something you really want to achieve your coach can help you find the way to get there. Everyone has the potential to achieve great things – your coach will help you identify the steps you need to take right now to start your journey to success.
Your coach is a sounding board – I will ask you questions, sometimes tough detailed questions, but your answers will define your personal path to achieving your dearest dreams.
How does coaching work?
Initially I will simply listen; this is how I encourage you to talk freely and openly about your life, your hopes and your ultimate goals.
My role is then to ask carefully considered, thought-provoking questions that stimulate the inner you to move in a positive direction. Sometimes you will find this challenging but my challenges will be gentle and productive. As we progress your self-belief will grow and you will strengthen your resolve to deliver your promises to yourself, and reach that treasured goal.
What if I need advice?
In the classic sense, coaching is not an advisory service. However, when your coach has relevant experience he or she may be well equipped to offer useful advice. I find that several of my clients do ask for my help and this can be a powerful addition to coaching – but that has to be driven by you. Your coach will start from the premise that you have the answers inside yourself and will never volunteer solutions.
Do I have to tell you my innermost secrets?
You will never be coerced into sharing secrets but by telling your coach the things that are concerning you and holding you back, you open the door to a much more productive coaching relationship. Nothing that you tell me will ever be revealed to anyone else – whether that is your partner or your employer. The Coaching Code of Conduct explains this but also mentions the one situation where confidence may be broken – where it is clear from our conversations that you intend to harm yourself or others, or are planning to commit a crime. A copy of the code will be given to you at the start of our relationship.
How long is a coaching session and how many will I need?
This is a ‘piece of string’ question but I can give you some examples. After our initial intake session, say 45 minutes to an hour, we will schedule several sessions typically starting with 6 of 30 to 45 minutes. The precise number will depend on your current situation and the nature of your eventual goal. One recent client told me after just 4 sessions “you have changed my life”. I pointed out that she had changed her own life and I had simply helped her draw the route map.
Another client has had 12 sessions so far because each time she reaches her goal she sets herself another one. One client had a very specific goal and time frame as he wanted to be more confident about a forthcoming board promotion – we tackled his major issues successfully in just 6 sessions. Frequency is entirely down to you – some clients like weekly sessions, others every other week, or monthly.
Do I have to visit you?
Again this is your own choice. I do most of my sessions over Skype so neither of us has to travel. However, coaching about work issues is often more productive done face to face, and I would then visit you at your office or your own choice of external venue.
What would be my minimum commitment?
Apart from your £45 discovery session, there is no future commitment. During your discovery session, we will discuss your goals and how coaching can help you achieve them. You can then choose to book some sessions, or simply decide that coaching is not for you. The number of sessions required will depend on the nature and complexity of your goals.
